Diamond K Ranch, 1st antlers April 12, 2003

I am asked many times, "when do deer start growing their antlers?"
It depends on many factors, but I did see my first antlers for the 2003 season on April the 12th of this year. As a matter of fact I saw several deer on the Diamond K Ranch with antlers. Some were already 3-4 inches long and one that I only got to see on tape had already started to fork. This means that they might have had antlers as early as March?????

I have seen buck with last years antlers in May. Does this mean that there is no exact dates. Could it be like many times it could be dependent upon nutrition, ranch conditions and many other factors that I don't understand. Well, we all know I am not a game biologist and there are a lot people that know a lot more about it than I ever will, but I just thought I would report what I saw and ask a few questions.
