Hunt with Robert Hoague, Webmaster of Bowhunting.net
| By Jim Autrey
Hunting for feral hogs on the Leon River proves why they call it hunting! Robert Hoague, web-master of Bowhunting.net invited me to come to his place to film a series of hunting feral hogs. He had been doing the scouting and had seen hogs every afternoon for the past week. Arriving at his place around 5:00pm, it all of the sudden dawned on me that it was still around 100 degrees and with no rain for the past sixty days, it was a little uncomfortable to say the least. We got all of the gear loaded in Robert’s truck and made the short drive to the Leon River where we would set up on a high bank and wait for the hogs to travel up or down the almost dry riverbed. By the time we had everything is place it was almost six o’clock, leaving us a good two hours of shooting time. We hadn’t been there but a few minutes and the first bit of excitement came when we heard a twig snap off to our left. Careful watching detecting movement in the tall weeds and we were sure this was going to be a quick and successful trip. Then it appeared. A small calf about the size of a good boar hog. Another good lesson in target identification. Two more hours passed and there were the sounds and sights of wanted success, but when it was all over, I came away with much more than a successful hog hunt. While, we set there waiting and waiting, Robert made a statement that made my hunt successful, when he said, " I love hunting in the afternoon, because every second that passes is better than the last". I look forward to returning to the Leon River and again hunting hogs with Robert and when I do, I’ll be right here to tell you about it. Be sure and visit
