Chantry's
Buck
| By John Haggard
The first day of the special kids season was a wet rainy morning in Northern Erath County. The cold drizzle and low clouds held off the approaching daylight. It seemed like sun light would never light the clearing that Chantry and I watched in hope of seeing a nice 10 pt buck we had seen earlier in October while scouting. As the sun finally won the battle with the clouds, a beautiful 6 pt with a 17" spread strolled into the clearing. He had large heavy body and was very light in color, nearly white in the low light. I knew she had her heart set on a 10 pt but this was a nice buck. I asked her if this buck was good enough for her. "No, she could wait for a bigger buck", was her reply. She had told me in the preceding months that she wanted a 10 pt buck. This seemed like a hard order to fill, especially coming from an 8 year old. Chantry has done well in the past 2 years. When she was 6 she took a nice 6 pt with a 14" spread, on the first morning of the special kids season. Her second season, she took a doe on the second evening of the kids season. After the 6 pt drifted out of sight, Chantry crawled into my lap. The temperature was not cold, but with the cool drizzle and wind blowing in our faces, she wanted a warm spot to curl up. About 15 minutes later, I saw some activity off to the left of our blind. I I saw several does and the 6 pt we had seen earlier, I could see another deer a ways off but could not tell if it was a good buck. While scouting the area we had seen as many as 20 deer coming in to the feeder. Quite a few of them were little bucks from spikes to 5 pt. Chantry was sleeping peacefully in my arms. I had a strange suspicion that this was a good buck. I woke Chantry up, and told her I thought this was a good buck. About then the does and 6 pt moved in towards the feeder, and out of the shroud of mist Chanty’s buck walks in. Wow, he is better than the 10 pt buck we had seen earlier while scouting. He is sporting a beautiful dark 8 pt rack with long tines and had a kicker point coming off of his right brow tine. Up comes the Ruger mini-thirty with the 4x Leupold. My heart races, what if she misses! This is a nice buck! I never had a chance at a buck like this when l was her age. Chantry calmly aims the rifle, seconds tick by like hours, the buck is slowly walking towards the feeder. Finally he stops. BANG! He runs a few yards and I see the spot on his shoulder where he was hit. A quick second shot rings out and he drops in his tracks. I gave Chantry a big hug and tell her congratulations. We make our way out of the blind to the buck, what a deer! Now it’s picture time, only 20 minutes into the season. We go get the truck and are greeted by Whitefoot, my dog. She greets me every time I come back from hunting. She lives to trail deer. But with Chantry’s well placed shot there is no trailing job. Chantry’s deer won
1st place in the Female Youth division at the Fort Worth Hunters extravaganza.
All hunters should take the opportunity to take a kid hunting. lf you don't
have one borrow someone else’s. Yap, I am one proud daddy.
